INDUSTRY CITY STREETSCAPE & BROOKLYN NETS PLAZA

Industry City asked terrain to develop a landscape strategy for a collection of re-purposed dumpsters to be used throughout the street network at Industry City.

Terrain developed a color-coded graphic system for the color and finish of the dumpsters paired with a specific planting palette for each of the Dumpsters.  Terrain proposed a range of graphic options including matching the plant palettes with a specific image of the associated habitat. Another option proposed a simple color coding of the Dumpsters with one of the main colors from the planting palette.

The Dumpsters are constantly moved around the campus and provide much needed street edge landscape massing during critical periods of construction—helping to screen the street edges and marking new areas of recently leased ground floor spaces. The mobile landscapes are also a simple way to extend the lush landscapes of the courtyards out onto the busy, heavily trafficked street edges.

The Nets Plaza includes planting a 5,700 SF elevated entry plaza for the Nets Training facility. The design includes terraced plantings across the entry steps and outside the café. This street edge also includes 6 new dumpster planters that brings a lush street edge to the plaza space. The plaza is flanked by ABC carpet store and design focused retail along the southern edge of the plaza.
