COTTAGE GARDENS AFFORDABLE HOUSING REDEVELOPMENT
In collaboration with The Community Builders and MAP Architects, terrain assisted with the approval of a multi-phase masterplan for the redevelopment of the Cottage Gardens Municipal Housing Complex in Yonkers, New York. The masterplan is centered around a new, large sloping park that will add much needed green space to the existing neighborhood. The park is scheduled for construction in the fifth phase of redevelopment.
Completed in winter 2019, the third phase of the plan consisted of two parcels of mid-rise, town-home housing. Site amenities include a playground, passive recreation spaces, and custom entrance gardens at each unit. Detention cisterns are located underground throughout the site to promote storm water infiltration and reduce runoff to the Hudson River.
Planting design focused on providing a unique entrance experience for each resident. Colorful native perennials are paired with evergreen shrubs, ground covers, and a small flowering tree. Playground equipment was selected to be challenging and fun for a wide age range of children who live at Cottage Gardens.
